INTRODUCING THE 2002 SAMMY WINNERS

The Milk Mustache Campaign is pleased to introduce the SAMMY 2002 Winners. Pictured here are the 5th annual award winners. SAMMY 2002 recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the contiguous United States. Judging is based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership and community service. A panel of celebrity judges chose the twenty-five (25) winners. Each scholar athlete receives a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation to attend an awards weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the opportunity to be pictured in national publications including this magazine and USA TODAY.

MilkPEP’s processor newsletter MilkSplash (August 2002, p. 4) reprints the ad and says that “at the fifth annual Student Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) award celebration in June” the celebrity judges “chose the 25 scholar-athletes from a record 30,000 applicants”.

According to newspaper reports gathered by the research pass, about 30,000 students applied for SAMMY 2002; the judges were Kurt Warner, Cal Ripken Jr., Marion Jones, Mat Hoffman, Mia Hamm, Pete Sampras and Tony Hawk; and a SAMMY Hall of Fame was begun at The Milk House, Disney’s Wide World of Sports. The Record-Courier (July 3, 2002) names Lauren Wallace of Galena High School, Reno, Nevada, volleyball, and says she “joins 100 past SAMMY award winners” (four classes of 25). The Bangor Daily News (July 4, 2002) names Christopher Paul Sighinolfi of Brewer High School, Maine (reported in a search summary; the ad prints “Christopher P. Sighinolfi, Brewer, Maine”).

Elana Alessandra Meyers of Douglasville, Georgia, printed in this ad, is the bobsledder Elana Meyers, who won Olympic bronze in 2010; a Perishable News item on the 2010 SAMMY ceremony calls her a former SAMMY winner without giving the year, which this ad settles.
