The American Dairy Association used this as a distinct advertising theme. A Cornell campaign history documents its first use. Commercial copies and exact placements are still being researched.

Campaign history
A new reason to choose milk
The American Dairy Association introduced Milk’s the One on television in September 1978. Its earlier advertising often treated milk as something kept at home and served with meals. Research cited in a contemporary Cornell study suggested regular milk drinkers did not necessarily choose it when eating away from home, so the new work made milk a beverage to select freely, wherever the occasion arose. What the theme promised
Cornell’s later survey of American Dairy Association advertising themes lists 1978 as the first year of Milk’s the One. It identifies the theme as milk as a beverage of choice and names D’Arcy-MacManus & Masius as the agency. That positioning gives the campaign an identity separate from later messages about refreshment or physical health, even when the sponsor and product remained the same. Source: MilkPEP.
How to identify the work
The slogan itself is the strongest identification clue for surviving commercials and print pieces. The 1979 Cornell account confirms a television start, and the 1987 campaign table places this theme between Milk Is a Natural and Milk. The Fresher Refresher. A commercial from this period should not be assigned to Milk’s the One solely because it shows an American Dairy Association logo; the title, audio, or end card should establish the theme.
