Notes

The Milk Mustache Book (1998), photo and illustration credits (p. 152), credits an image it calls “Halley's Comet” to James Balog / Tony Stone Images; that is most likely the comet photograph used in this ad.

The Milk Mustache Book (1998, p. 144) calls this “Our Own Milky Way Comet”. It was made for LIFE’s commemorative reissue of its 1969 special report on the Apollo 11 mission, “To the Moon and Back”. Because the milk mustache was by then so well known, the agency decided for the first time not to show it on a celebrity’s face; art director Steve Feldman had the idea of the mustache as a comet. The page is dated March 15, 1996, Los Angeles, the same date and place the book prints for the Phantom shoot, so that line may have been carried over by mistake.
