INTRODUCING THE 1999 SAMMY WINNERS

The Milk Mustache Campaign is pleased to introduce the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year or SAMMY 1999 Winners. Pictured here are the 2nd annual award winners. SAMMY 1999 was designed to recognize outstanding scholar athletes in grades 9-12 from high schools throughout the continental United States. Judging was based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership and community service. A panel of celebrity judges from the Milk Mustache Campaign — the ones you see here — chose the twenty-five (25) winners. Each scholar athlete has received a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation to attend an awards weekend and the opportunity to be pictured in national publications including this magazine and USA TODAY.

Notes

Milk Ad Collecting Central inventories a two-piece 1999 SAMMY Winners creative. Exact publication/issue remains unresolved.

Main image replaced with a larger copy of the same ad (3,000 pixels wide), made from the PDF the campaign posted on bodybymilk.com, as kept by the Internet Archive.

The winners list on this page was re-read from the ad itself in October 2026; the list shown here before had misread several names and towns (for example “Jennifer Michalstein”, “Melpark, VA”, “Longboat, FL”, “Deanna Aralah”, “Wei He”, “Eric Garrard”, “Becky Dudian” and “Jenelle Barkl”, which the ad prints as Jennifer Michelstein, Mobjack, Longwood, Deema Arafah, Wei Ho, Erin Gerrard, Becky Dodson and Jeneille Barkl).

According to newspaper reports gathered by the research pass, SAMMY 1999 chose one winner from each of 25 regions, held the awards weekend in Washington, D.C., and ran the winners ad in USA Today, Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine and All-Stater Sports (issues not given). The Las Vegas Sun of August 24, 1999, names Erin Armstrong of Bonanza High School, Las Vegas, a soccer player, as the Nevada winner. The Pueblo Chieftain of July 8, 1999 (“Hey, I know that kid!”) is about the 1999 winners but could not be read (access restricted).
